The CPA Australia Formula 3 Team had high expectations for Round 4 of
the championship, however realised that Winton was a tough track to
learn for the first time and with no opportunity to test between rounds,
Paul would have his work cut out for him.
Unfortunately, Friday
morning did not get off to a good start for the team with the 1990
Dallara failing to hit the track for Practice 1. As Paul had never
driven at the circuit before, missing first practice was only going to
make his weekend even tougher.
It was found that the
reason the car would not start, was because of an electrical problem.
With this problem sorted, the team were able to get the car on to the
circuit for the afternoon’s practice. This was the first chance Paul
was able to learn the track. However, the team were unhappy with the
car’s performance and sensed something else was wrong.
Saturday arrived and
Qualifying was on a wet circuit. However the CPA Australia team were
again unable to take part in the qualifying, as they had the engine off
the car, looking for the cause of a lack of power.
With the car back
together in the afternoon, the team were able to send Paul out for only
the second time. The times came down dramatically during the 20 minute
session. To begin with the team were 4 or 5 seconds off the pace, but at
the conclusion of the qualifying, the team were only half a second away
from the quickest level 2 car.
Sunday morning, and
the track was soaked, as the rain fell all morning. For the first warm
up, the team went out on wet tyres. After the 10 minute session it was
decided that slicks would be the ideal tyre for the race.
Starting from the
rear of field due to missing first qualifying, Paul was able to bring
the car into 2nd place in Level 2, by the first turn.
Unfortunately while dicing with the 1st place car, Paul
touched a slippery part of turn 1 and spun the car. This put him well
down in the field, but was able to bring it home and collect points.
The team was
disappointed but were not too disenchanted, given the fact that they
have had such little track time and Paul was still learning the circuit.
Race 2 and again the
team started from the back row, but again off the start line, Paul was
able to bring the car up to 2nd place in Level 2. Paul
applied the pressure early to the Level 2 race leader and it was not
long before the leader had a spin. This allowed Paul to take the lead,
but he was being closely followed. For most of the race Paul and the 2nd
level 2 car were nose to tail before Paul was able to slowly pull away
and cruise home for a level 2 victory.
Unfortunately due to
a spin in the first race, the CPA Australia team were not able to pick
up maximum points. They are currently 2nd in the Championship
and trail by 51 points.
Round 5 is at
Wakefield Park and Paul has tested there before, in the Mspeed Reynard
and has posted some very competitive times. The team is hoping for
maximum points and a chance to close the gap in the championship.
