The CPA Australia team had refreshed the
car during the 8 week break and attempted to complete 2 test sessions at
Mallala in Adelaide, before the Wakefield Park event. The first test
session started badly with a thrust bearing seizing early in the day.
After only completing one session the team decided on another test day
the following week. This time the car had a failure that led to a low
speed crash into a tyre barrier. The team worked hard to have the car
out for the afternoon and after only 5 laps the engine stopped halfway
down the back straight. It seemed like an electrical fault and with
that, testing was over.
The team arrived at
the Wakefield Park circuit on Thursday, and set up camp whilst Paul
attended a promotional event for CPA Australia. After only a handful of
laps in testing, the team were nervous about this event.
Friday morning and
after a 3 hour delay due to fog, the team had their car out on the
track. Unfortunately the brake pads that the team had just replaced,
weren’t suitable for the Dallara and the car continuously locked front
wheels. The team were off the pace, but at least had an opportunity to
work on setup.
Qualifying on
Saturday saw the team find another couple seconds in the car and were
leading most of qualifying until the last lap by Bill Maddocks, saw him
take pole in Race 1 for Level 2.
In the 2nd
qualifying session, there was only 0.1 of a second separating the front
2 cars in Level 2, with Maddocks again in front.
Race 1 was in perfect
weather conditions, but unfortunately on the warm up, Bill Maddocks
pulled off with clutch failure. This was a great opportunity for the CPA
Australia team to collect maximum points in Race 1 and they did exactly
that, finishing 1st in Level 2 and 12th overall.
Race 2 was also in
clear conditions, but very windy. Maddocks got a great start and got
ahead of John Boothman in a Level 1 car and Paul Trengove followed. 6
laps into the race, Boothman overtook Maddocks and Trengove was now
right behind. Then Boothman in the faster Level 1 car, put a wheel on
the dirt which forced Maddocks off line and gave Trengove the
opportunity to draw level alongside Maddocks. Paul was able to pass into
the final corner of the circuit and then concentrated on building a
strong lead.
Trengove maintained
his 3 second buffer for most of the race and won Race 2, to collect
maximum points for the Round. The CPA Australia team is still 2nd
in the championship, but now only by 11 points behind the Series leader
Rod Anderson, with Bill Maddocks in 3rd. The CPA Australia
team have now won the last 3 races and hope to continue this form in
Melbourne for Round 6 at Sandown.
