Trengove within 1 point of championship lead!

The Formula 3 circus headed for Melbourne last weekend for Round 6 of the Australian Formula 3 Championship. For the CPA Australia team, this was a chance to bridge the gap back to Rod Anderson, who had a lead of 11 points coming into the Sandown round.

The team had never been to this circuit and Paul Trengove had never driven around the track. Before first practice, expectations were not too high, as it was a chance for Paul to find the bumps and settle into the car. However they were only 2 seconds off the other Level 2 cars, and were confident this gap could be closed.

The second practice session saw Bill Maddocks post the quickest Level 2 time, with Trengove just over a second behind.

Saturday morning started off dry and the times were becoming much quicker. Paul had become much more comfortable with the car and he was certainly coming to grips with the track. A scary moment for Paul on his first quick lap though, when at over 200kph a rear wheel locked into the braking area of turn 1, causing him to spin. Luckily no damage and at the end of the session, Paul was the quickest Level 2 car by a tenth of a second.

Early afternoon was the 2nd qualifying and the rain had drenched the track in the lead up to the session. Some cars chose the safe option of wet tyres, while the CPA Australia team were confident the track would be dry by the end of the session. With only 3 minutes remaining, Trengove had managed to post a time that was 3 seconds faster than the next Level 2 car and decided to pit. However on the last lap, Anderson posted a quicker time on the drying circuit which dropped Trengove to 2nd.

Saturday afternoon saw dry conditions for Race 1. Trengove got a great start, but Anderson lead to the first turn and quickly built a gap of over 2 seconds. From here Paul was able to gradually bring the gap down to the point where he was challenging for the lead. Paul seemed quicker through the tight parts of the circuit, but Anderson’s car was very quick down the straight.

With 2 laps to go, Paul faked a move down the inside and switched to the outside around the lefthander. He was carrying much more speed than Anderson who had covered his line, and was able to go around the outside through turn 2. He held on for his 5th win for the season, with Anderson 2nd followed by Bill Maddocks.

Race 2 was held on Sunday morning, in cold but dry conditions. Trengove again got a great start and this time led Anderson into turn 1. However a faster Level 1 car from the rear of the grid went under brakes and forced Trengove wide, allowing Anderson to take the lead in Level 2. This time Anderson stretched his lead to over 3 seconds in the early part of the race, but again Paul kept in touch with Maddocks gaining in 3rd position. With 5 laps remaining, Trengove was able to pull alongside of Anderson as they headed towards turn 1. Trengove was on the outside and was the last of the late breakers, as he took the lead from Anderson. Paul then maintained a comfortable lead for the rest of the race and took the 2nd race of the meeting and the Round Win.

It was the team’s 6th win of the season and they have also won the last 5 races in a row. The CPA Australia Team is now only 1 point behind Anderson in the Championship, with 2 Rounds remaining.

The team heads for Phillip Island on the 20th –22nd of September for Round  7, where they hope they can take the lead of the Level 2 Championship.
