DISASTER WEEKEND FOR CPA AUSTRALIA TEAM
After
promising signs early in the weekend, the CPA Australia team suffered a
severe blow to its 2002 National Series Campaign. Paul Trengove was
quickest all weekend, but a mechanical failure would see him drop further
behind in the championship.
After
leaving the car in Melbourne following Round 6 at Sandown in Melbourne,
the team arrived from Adelaide early to toe the trailer to Phillip Island
to begin preparations. By around 9pm the car was setup and ready for first
Practice.
Paul
having never seen the long Phillip Island circuit, was content to take
plenty of time to learn the track and ascertain any changes that may need
to occur to the car. The team were not expecting to be on the pace, but to
their surprise were only half a second away from the front runners.
The second
practice was a chance for Paul to test the changes and experiment with a
new set of gear ratios. They did not work, but the team still found time
in the car, as Paul became more comfortable with the circuit.
First
qualifying was an exciting one for Level 2, with Bill Maddocks posting a
very quick lap time early in the session. Paul’s last lap fell just 0.2
of a second short of a pole position time.
Second
qualifying saw the team make a small change to the car in hope of gaining
some time. However this did not work and Paul quickly came in to have the
car reset to the first qualifying setup. With only 3 laps to put in a
quick time, Trengove was able to claim pole on his final hot lap by half a
second.
Race 1 on
Sunday morning saw a dry track with fine conditions. Paul got a great
start and headed through turns 1 and 2 in the lead for Level 2. However
the team had replaced the brake pads and although Paul bedded them in on
the warm up laps, they were still not 100% .
At Honda corner, Paul outbraked himself and ran wide, allowing
Anderson to take the lead. However Paul was right behind him and within a
lap drove around the outside of Anderson heading into the 250kph Turn 1.
This move also allowed Maddocks to pass Anderson, moving him into 2nd
position.
From there
Paul built a 3 second lead and retained it til the end of the race, also
setting the fastest lap of the weekend in Level 2 – a 1:34.3
As a
result of the win, the CPA Australia team took the lead in the Level 2
National Series for the first time in 2002.
Leading by
7 points to Anderson, the team were confident of extending this lead in
Race 2. However, as Paul left the pits to begin his observation lap, the
water-pump broke and dropped the pulley causing an instant loss of oil
pressure. Paul switched the engine off and was out of the race before it
began. Anderson was able to take the lead from Maddocks off the start line
and held it to win Race 2. With the CPA Australia team not scoring any
points in the 2nd Race, Anderson again leads the National
series, this time by 13 points.
With only
1 Round remaining on the Gold Coast for the Honda Indy 300, the National
Series is still achievable for the team. If the team can win both races
and Anderson finishes as low as 3rd in at least 1 race, the
Series will go to the CPA Australia team.
However
the amount of damage to the engine has not yet been determined. If it is
quite extensive, the team’s season will be over as they can not afford
to repair it. Hopefully the 1990 Dallara will be on the track in a
month’s time!
