Paul is the 3rd generation driver in his family. (Grandfather Doug Trengove raced cars and built the 1960's Cicada Ford. Father Mike Trengove raced in Clubmans, Formula 2 and Formula 5000).

Paul began his racing career at age 7 racing Go Karts in Adelaide and interstate.

After a long stint in karting he concentrated more on his studies through high school and university. During these years he tested in Formula Ford and Formula Vee.

At the end of 2000, after graduating with an Accounting Degree, Paul took out a personal loan to buy a Formula Vee.

In 2001 Paul won the South Australian Novice Championship in the Formula Vee and finished in the top 5 in the 2001 South Australian Formula Vee Series.

In November 2001, Paul had his first test of a Formula 3, testing the 'Mspeed' Reynard at Eastern Creek. After posting consistant and competitive times, he was invited to drive the car at the final round of the Australian F3 Championship at Oran Park (a track he'd never driven on). On debut, Paul won the round in Level 2 (24mm).

For the 2002 season, Paul joined forces with CPA Australia, Australia's largest professional organisation, to compete in the Australian Formula 3 National Series. Starting in his home town of Adelaide, Paul took to the streets at the Clipsal 500, but unfortunately crashed badly in opening practice which destroyed his chances of a win in front of his home crowd. The season was not looking much better during the first half of the season.

However after winning 6 races in a row, Paul was in a position to take the Series at the final round on the Gold Coast at the Indy Carnival. Paul won both races and became the 2002 Australian Formula 3 National Series Winner.

In 2003, Paul competed at the Clipsal 500 in a leased car, as insufficient funding meant he could not sign for a full season.

After finally landing a sponsor for the 2003 season, Paul formed Paul Trengove Motorsport, a team which competed in the Formula 4000 Australian Drivers' Championshiph in a 1995 Reynard. Although missing the opening round, he finished on the podium every race meeting and was one of 5 contenders for the championship in the final round. Unfortunately he was unable to win this time round and had to second for =2nd with New Zealender Jonny Reid, while Daniel Gaunt (NZ) took out the Gold Star Award.
