F4000
- The
Grand Finale
It has been
nearly 3 months since the Formula 4000’s last took to the track at Mallala
Raceway in South Australia. The fastest racing cars in Australia now head to
Eastern Creek, Sydney for the final Round of the Australian Drivers’
Championship.
In what is a
first for this category, a staggering 5 drivers can still win the CAMS Gold Star
Award, with the top 3 separated by only 2 points.
Leading the
Championship is New Zealander, Daniel Gaunt, who drove consistently at Mallala
to claim 2 race wins. Only one point behind, Ricki Occhipinti from Victoria, who
really enjoys fast flowing tracks such as Phillip Island and Eastern Creek, will
be very competitive.
A further one
point behind Ricki is Paul Trengove, from South Australia, who missed the first
round of the season, but has driven consistently all year to create a great
opportunity to win the Gold Star Award.
“This
Championship means the world to me right now. It’d be such a dream to win the
highest award in Australian motorsport and it would be a great reward to share
with my Dad and the CPA Australia team.”
Nelson Hartley
and Jonny Reid, both from New Zealand, are also in with a strong chance of
winning the Championship in 4th and 5th.
Two
weeks ago, many of the drivers made the journey to Sydney to test at Eastern
Creek. Also in attendance was Peter Hill, former Formula 4000 race driver who
now races in the Carrera Cup. Hill will compete the final round in F4000 and has
had plenty of experience in these cars and the Eastern Creek circuit. He will
definitely be in the mix for the Round win.
Trengove
struggled in testing. The car setup was not great and whilst learning the track,
Paul was suffering from bad neck pains during the sessions. However he remains
confident of winning the Championship. “To win the Championship, I really need
to finish in front of Gaunt and Occhipinti. So that will be my focus for the
weekend”.
The
final Round begins on Saturday the 29th of November and concludes on
Sunday the 30th.
